Our eyes are generally round-shaped, with the eyeball and the whites of the eye. Inside the black part of the eye is the iris and a small pupil in the center, typically measuring around 2-5 mm.
The pupil serves to control the amount of light entering our eyes.
The iris has muscles that cause the pupil to constrict and dilate. These muscles are divided into two groups: one set radiates outward from the center of the pupil, and when they contract, the pupil expands. The other set runs parallel to the circular edge of the iris. When they contract, the pupil constricts.
When both the pupil and iris work together, it's a responsive process. The pupil contracts when exposed to light to reduce or control excessive light, and it dilates in low-light conditions to allow more light in.
Therefore, conducting eye tests in low light conditions is essential because we want the pupil to dilate to obtain the true eye values of individuals and to conduct detailed and efficient eye tests.
However, if we examine the eyes in a lit condition, the pupils will not dilate. This can lead to inaccurate eye measurements during the examination, as patients may squint without realizing it. Consequently, this may result in inaccuracies in the prescription and reduce the effectiveness of vision correction.
✅ Vision tests: to assess the ability to see clearly at different distances.
✅ Visual field tests: to assess peripheral vision.
✅ Eye muscle function tests: to identify issues related to the muscles around the eyes by moving objects around the visual field.
✅ Pupil response tests: to evaluate how light enters the eyes. Optometrists shine a small light into your eyes to see how your pupils respond.
Besides eye examinations, Mulleur Optical also has a Slit Lamp instrument to conduct preliminary front eye disease checks by optometrists.
What can you find in the check-up?
🔷 Skin around the eyes: to check for scars or various skin conditions.
🔷 Eyelids and eyelashes: to check for diseases such as styes or inflammation of the eyelids.
🔷 Eye surface: to check for dry eyes.
🔷 Sclera (white of the eye): to assess the health of the episclera, which is related to diseases such as allergies or immune system disorders.
🔷 Cornea: to check if the cornea is clear.
🔷 Lens: to check for diseases like cataracts that may occur with age.
You can have your eyes examined in low-light conditions or in a standard darkened room, and receive preliminary front eye disease checks by optometrists using the Slit Lamp instrument at Müller OPTIK, located opposite Lanna Hospital. We are open every day from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM.
