How much harm can peering without realizing it cause? Let's find out together!!

In today's daily life, many people who are studying or working have to focus on electronic screens, reading books, driving, or even doing any activity for a long time. One unavoidable issue is eye fatigue, which can occur in people of all genders and ages, and you may not even realize that you are peering.

Eye fatigue may result from excessive peering, whether at close or far distances. The eye muscles may strain, causing images or objects to become unfocused, and sometimes stiffness may occur, causing the muscles to become tense. When experiencing such symptoms, resting the eyes can help alleviate them. Sometimes, after peering for a long time, there may be symptoms like eye twitching, eye pain, eye irritation, dry eyes, or headaches.

๐Ÿ”ท How does eye fatigue occur? ๐Ÿ”ท

  • Blurry vision, starting with difficulty reading text on electronic screens or in books clearly, leads us to try to focus more.

  • Blinking frequently when looking, often squinting when seeing blurred images or objects, not clear, or in low light conditions to see clearer images.

  • Vision changes, seeing images less clearly than before. These changes can occur at any time, and we may not be aware of them.

๐Ÿ“Œ Does peering affect our eyes? ๐Ÿ“Œ

Under normal circumstances, our eyes can see objects clearly both near and far due to the functioning of the ciliary muscles. This allows the lenses to adjust their focus, providing clear vision of nearby objects on the retina. When looking far away, the muscles relax, but when looking close, they contract to increase the power of the lenses, leading to clear near vision.

For those who often stare at close objects, these muscles work longer than usual, leading to persistent nearsightedness. When looking far away, they may still be in a state of nearsightedness, resulting in unclear distant vision, which often lasts for some time. If these muscles relax, the eyes return to their normal state. Therefore, this condition is considered "temporary nearsightedness" or "pseudomyopia," which may, in some cases, progress to actual nearsightedness, affecting vision.

Many doctors believe that in some individuals, temporary or pseudo-myopia may develop into true myopia, potentially leading to persistent myopia. (Dr. Kawin Wanikiet, 2016)

โœ… How can temporary nearsightedness be prevented? โœ…

  1. It's advisable to take breaks from close-up work to relax the eye muscles. You can opt for the 20/20/20 rule, which involves looking at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes. Alternatively, you can take a 1-minute break every half an hour or use your eyes for an hour and then rest them for 5-10 minutes to prevent strain.
    1. Avoid using your eyes in places with insufficient lighting or reading very small print, as it can further stimulate eye strain.

    2. Have an annual eye health check-up with an eye specialist or optometrist to assess if any eye strain, fatigue, or vision changes are occurring and to identify their causes.

    3. Some individuals may need to use prescription glasses for close-up work (plus lenses) or lenses to reduce strain, such as Essilor's Eyezen or Hoya's SYNC lenses. These lenses help minimize strain, with the plus prescription aiding in near vision

When we habitually strain to focus on something, it's something we shouldn't overlook. Even though it may not have immediate severe consequences, it can affect our daily lives, such as eye fatigue, tiredness, and headaches, and if neglected over time, it may lead to pseudo-myopia and changes in vision prescription, resulting in either increased nearsightedness or farsightedness.

Therefore, it's important to take breaks from prolonged focus by looking around or using the 20-20-20 rule. If unsure whether it's just normal strain or strain due to vision changes, consider getting an eye check-up with an optometrist or ophthalmologist to prevent vision changes and address issues before they become severe.

The Relax lens series is designed with a two-zone lens structure to correct vision for both distance and near vision, reducing the lens power to alleviate eye strain when focusing on close-up tasks such as reading or digital device usage.

These glasses enhance eye comfort with photochromic technology that automatically adjusts to sunlight, with this particular model featuring Gray tint. When paired with the red and gold hues of the Guess frame, they elevate fashion sense when stepping out into the sunlight.
